Currently, Crystal Dynamics is working on the next Tomb Raider entry using the Unreal Engine 5. As it stands, the project now is intended to be a complete reboot, with no director or stars currently attached.Ģ018’s Tomb Raider earned nearly $275 million at the global box office against a reported $160 budget.īack in May, previous owner Square Enix agreed to sell Crystal Dynamics to Swedish company Embracer Group for $300 million. The planned sequel was to be directed by “Lovecraft Country” director and producer Misha Green, and was intended to be her feature directorial debut. As a result, the film rights have now reverted back to video game series developer Crystal Dynamics, with the rights reportedly now in the midst of a bidding war between several studios. The film stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, who embarks on a perilous journey to her fathers last-known destination, hoping to solve the mystery of his. Per a report by The Wrap, MGM had until May of this year to get a Tomb Raider sequel off the ground, and that obviously never happened. Not only has MGM lost the film rights, but star Alicia Vikander, who played Lara Croft in the 2018 film, is no longer attached to the project. I loved the games and as a huge fan I think this movie is pretty well made.Bad news for those waiting for the follow-up to 2018’s Tomb Raider film. This is what you want to see if you ever imagined yourself being Lara. It seems kinda raw, which the game is as well. The earlier games were more about riddles, the new ones are about running and fighting, which I personally don't like.īut the movie is entertaining, and I like how it was directed. In this movie you see more of the kind of stuff you get from the game it was based on. I loved Angelina Jolie's Lara doing her training at the manor, for example, and there was more cool ancient stuff going on. I wish there was more game-like stuff in the movie, like in the first Tomb Raider movies. Her acting was great too, it was very intense and realistic - the emotions and the sounds she made during the fight made it seem like it was all happening for real. Alicia looks stunning and sporty, and she oozes Lara Croft from every pore. There's been a lot of talk about her practically nonexistent breasts, and 'of course' the real Lara is quite busty, but I find this talk ridiculous. And she looks very athletic so that adds to the overal feel of Lara being a spunky little adventuress.Ģ. Apparently Alicia did some stunts herself so maybe they didn't have to use so much CGI. She looked like Alicia Vikander, an actual person that has stuff happen to her. They looked real and Lara didn't look like some plastic figure jumping and tumbling around and whatnot. I can't say it has a great storyline, but at least it has some storyline, unlike most Hollywood action movies these days.ġ. This is definitely not the worst movie of the century.
